The Story of Imam Hassan's Generosity

A man came to Imam Hassan and asked him about his need. Hassan said, "The right that has been established for me because of your question is very high in my eyes, and the help that I should give you is very large in my opinion, and my financial condition is incapable of offering an amount that is worthy of your honor, and no matter how much a person spends in the way of Allah, it is still very small. But what should I do if I do not have an amount that is worthy of your gratitude for my request? If you are willing to accept what I have with me and not force me to obtain an amount that is worthy of your honor, what should I do?

If it is suitable and you can fulfill the right that has become obligatory on me, then I am happy to come. The beggar said, "O son of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), I will accept whatever you give me and be grateful for it, and I will consider you excused for not giving more than that." So Hazrat Hassan (RA) said to his treasurer, "Bring the remaining three hundred thousand dirhams (that were kept with you)." The treasurer brought fifty thousand dirhams (everyone had spent more than that). Hazrat Hassan (RA) said, “Where were the five hundred dinars?” The treasurer replied, “They are also there. You ordered them to be brought. When all this arrived, you asked the beggar to bring a laborer who would take them to your house. So he brought two laborers. Hazrat Hassan (RA) handed over all this to them and, taking off his blessed body, said, “The wages of these laborers are also my responsibility, so sell this garment and pay their wages.” Seeing this whole incident, the slaves who took Hazrat Hassan (RA) said, “There is not even a dirham left for food. You have given everything.” Hazrat Hassan (RA) said, “I have strong hope from Allah Almighty that He will reward me greatly for it out of His grace.” (Fada’il Sadaqat, p. 698, with reference to Ihya)
